This simple elderberry syrup recipe made with frozen organic grown elderberries, honey and herbs is delicious syrup on homemade pancakes or waffles.
In folk medicine, the dried berries or juice are used to treat influenza, infections, sciatica, headaches, dental pain, heart pain and nerve pain, as well as a laxative and diuretic. Elderberry extract has been found to reduce the length and severity of symptoms caused by the influenza virus. Has some benefits for heart health, such as reducing cholesterol, uric acid and blood sugar levels. Is associated with many additional health benefits, such as fighting cancer and bacteria, immune support, UV protection and diuretic effects.
Elderberries are a low-calorie food packed with vitamin C, dietary fiber and antioxidants in the form phenolic acids, flavonols and anthocyanins. The flowers are particularly rich in flavonols.
Is recommended to use for 5 days of the week, then have a break for two days, to boost immunity.
If you feel like a cold is coming on, take the normal dose every 2-3 hours instead of once a day until symptoms disappear. If your symptoms worsen or stick around, check with your doctor.
Standard dose is ½ - 1 teaspoon for kids over 2 year of age, and ½ - 1 tablespoon for adults.
Elderberries are quite tart and need to be cooked to be eaten to remove cyanide. If you have concerns about this culinary herb is safe for you, check with your doctor.
